Dear Susan and other parents who are part of griefHaven,

I want to share with you what our family decided to do as a memorial for our daughter, Katie, who passed away on August 16, 2007 from cancer. This is a photo of Katie and me, a year before she was diagnosed with cancer:

Instead of sending flowers to us, we we asked people who wanted to do something for our family if they would consider donating to the Katie Gerstenberger Endowment for Cancer Research at Children's Hospital in Seattle, where she was so lovingly treated. Her endowment grew from zero to over $53,000.00 in about two months. We are so grateful to be able to support research in this way.

Another thing that we did, which I love, is to buy a bench in our town's waterfront park, and have a memorial plaque put on it. Here is a photo of our son, David, sitting on it.

Here is a photo of the plaque:

I wanted to share this with other parents who might be wondering what they can do in their community to honor their child's memory. I am sure that there are as many good ideas as there are wonderful, loving families out there. May all grieving hearts be blessed with comfort as we walk the path of learning to live without our beloved children!
